Bolstering its international standing in the field of secure electronic payment services, Middle East Payment Services (MEPS) – a consortium of elite local and regional banks that serves as a leading, innovative payment services provider in the Middle East – has launched a partnership with one of the world’s leading card schemes, UnionPay International (UPI). As per an agreement signed by MEPS Chairman, Caesar Qulajen, and China UnionPay Chairman, Ge Huayong at the Sheraton Amman Al-Nabil Hotel, MEPS will now accept UnionPay cards on points-of sale (POS) and ATMs in Jordan and Palestine, as well as act as a third party service provider in Iraq, capable of issuing and processing transactions on behalf of UPI.
UnionPay, a fast-growing international bankcard scheme, not only plays a defining role in China’s industry development but is also growing to be one of the world’s leading bankcard associations. It has now enabled card acceptance in 156 countries and regions outside the Chinese mainland, and has realized card-issuance in over 40 countries and regions globally. Constantly striving to develop its network, UPI actively collaborates with a wide-range of partners worldwide, limiting card risks and extending its unique card standards and regulations.
